Why/how Can a Parent Kill Their Child?

Once again Florida is in the news, local and national, and not for a
good reason. The headline in our local paper shouted:

Father plans funeral for Hollywood girl who police say was strangled
by mom

Police: Cheryl Arthur, 39, said she didn’t want her 3-year-old
daughter ‘to
turn out like her

I have known people in my life who have
had their children die for many reasons and just recently a couple of bloggers have written about
losing their child. I have worked with teenagers dying of AIDS turned
out of their homes by their parents and when I would call to tell them
to get down here, that their child had only a couple of days to live,
they would answer, "So what?" or "He/she is dead to me already." I don't
know how a parent can feel that way though I can understand it more
readily than I can a mother murdering her daughter.

I don't understand how/if a parent ever gets over
the death of their child no matter at what age, or how, it takes place.
Living in a senior residence many of the people have lost their children
and still grieve for them and they didn't kill them.

Okay, Cheryl Arthur didn't/doesn't lead a good
life. She had 3 children of which only one, her daughter, lived with her
while her sons lived with relatives. The police were called because of
abuse by her ex-husband. You can get the full story by going to www.sun-sentinel.com

She supposedly said she was feeling overwhelmed
and depressed when she took her daughter out for some fresh air and a
walk. While heading for the park she and her daughter, Makeda, stopped and ended up lying
on an embankment. She covered her child's mouth and nose with one hand
and strangled her with the other hand, then carrying her dead daughter
she was walking when a good samaritan, thinking the mother was carrying a
sleeping child, offered her ride and she asked to be taken to the
police station. He quickly realized the child was dead.

Yes,
maybe she was temporarily insane, depressed, but she readily confessed
to killing her child, saying that she didn't want Makeda to wind up like
her. She had sent her two sons away, why not her daughter? How could
she look at her daughter as the life ebbed out of her? Struggled under
her hands?

Supposedly the mother agreed to send
the girl up to her ex, who lives in New York, within the week. The
father, the ex, has nothing but good things to say about Cheryl and was
looking forward to having Makeda live with him and his family.

This
isn't the first case of a parent killing their child, or children, and
it is just beyond my understanding how they can take the life out of the ones they gave life to. And
why aren't they stopped before it happens?
Are we so isolated from each other that we don't see when someone is in
trouble? Are we so afraid to 'get involved'?

I'm asking
the questions because I don't know any of the answers and want to
understand why a mother would kill her daughter.
