Vice---movie Review

“Vice” is the first movie I have seen in 2019 and I can only hope it is the most boring film I will see this year. I have heard it being sold as a comedy and/or drama and/or satire. I admit up front I am not the best audience for a satire but if there was any it went over my head. There is nothing funny about this movie that shows how our country was manipulated and is still paying the price today. While a lot of this may be new or a history lesson to anyone under 30 most of it will be familiar to anyone older. Turning to the positives the actors all play to their strengths starting with Christian Bale who disappears into Dick Cheney not only with makeup, costume, and adding 45 pounds to his frame but in how he holds himself, talks and walks. As his wife Lynne, if she was really such a strong figure in his life, the woman behind the man who directs all that he does, Amy Adams is strong and both are good enough to make it believable that they would quote Shakespeare in bed! The only time I laughed was a very short cameo Alfred Molina has as a waiter in an upscale restaurant telling the power players the 5-6 ‘specials’ such as Guantanamo Bay. Tyler Perry as Colin Powell is almost unrecognizable while Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld shows how adaptable people playing the Washington game are. Alison Pill, as the Cheney’s lesbian married daughter has the full support of her father while Lily Rabe as her sister doesn’t. There are many others in the cast playing famous, infamous and unknown people but the standout performance is by Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush who, in his weakness let Lynne and Dick Cheney run the country. “Vice”, even with a stellar cast, is not worth the 132 minutes it lasts or whatever the admission price costs! (SPOILER) Oh wait!!! Maybe the satire is the phony ending an hour into the movie? Movietrailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p94agOvr2m0
