Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?

Tyler Perry has developed a niche in movies
that had made him a very successful movie maker. His films are aimed at
particular movie audiences who eat his films up. At today's (Friday)
matinee the auditorium was the most crowded I have seen it in a long
time and it was mainly a black audience with Allen, myself and another
couple of white people.

Having seen 3-4 of Perry's movie, none of the Madea, I really don't
understand why they haven't 'crossed-over' to a much wider audience of
mixed races. His movies consist of out loud belly laughs and plenty of
smiles along with tears pouring down the cheeks not to forget underlying
insights and lessons about life.

The
film takes a look at 4 up scale Black married couples, a cameo by Cicely
Tyson and Louis Gossett Jr as an old
married couple, and a single guy who is a friend of the men and the ex
of one of the women, Sheila, who he obviously had been abusive to.
Sheila, played expertly by  Jill Scott, is married to Troy, acted by Lamman Rucker,
and not only do they have a new baby but they have moved from Colorado
to Georgia and  Troy is having a hard time finding a job. Terry (Tyler
Perry),  and his lawyer wife, Dianne, (Sharon Leal)
appear to have the best, most solid marriage while whipped Marcus
(Michael Jai White) and nagging
Angela, (Tasha Smith) certainly get into 'make-up sex. Psychologist and
teacher Patricia, (Janet Jackson) and her architect husband, Gavin, (Malik Yoba) have lost a child, (which is
never explained) have an estranged marriage. All 4 marriages, after a
week in the Caribbean, seem to be on the verge of divorce and the film
goes from very funny to very serious following the turns their marriages
take.

Richard T. Jones,
who plays the abusive ex husband has a strange role but handles it very
competently as does most of the cast with their roles. Tasha Smith,
having the most comic role goes over the top now and then but the scene
where she invades a TV set is strictly the fault of writer and director
Perry as is the scene between the 5 men on the beach near the beginning
that falls flat. Janet Jackson goes crazy in a scene that all actresses
love but seems awkward in other scenes. There is a surprise appearance
near the end that may or may not hint at another sequel.

Tyler Perry
usually presents his stories first as a play and then makes movies of
them yet there is nothing stage bound about this film. It may be a
stereotype that Black men are the victims of Black women and Perry
doesn't do anything to change that stereotype but the Black women in the
audience this afternoon were joined by the men in their cheering and
booing and, I must admit, seeing it with this audience added to the
enjoyment of the film.

The bottom
line is that Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? makes me want to
see see Tyler Perry's Why Did I get Married?
