Weekend
Watercooler: New York State of Mind
• Now we’re talking. What a refreshing change from politicians that climb over each other to
deny GLBT folks their rights (I’m talking to you, twice-divorced
defender of marriage Governor Linda Lingle of Hawaii).
In my fair state of New York, the Democratic
candidate for Attorney General Sean
Coffey , has promised his support to the GLBT community in no
uncertain terms. From a press release Coffey has called for full
equality for every LGB AND T. His support covers all of our hot button
issues, ENDA, Fair Housing, marriage equality and DOMA.
“One
of the most important step towards achieving full equality is a repeal
of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which wrongfully denies gay and
lesbian couples their right to full expression of love and commitment
and further perpetuates a culture of discrimination that infects other
areas of American life. As the next Attorney General, I pledge to be
New York’s top legal advocate on this issue. I will file suit against
the federal government and support any action to repeal DOMA. I fully
support Congressman Jerry Nadler’s bill – the Respect for Marriage Act –
that would repeal this draconian law,” he wrote.
Hey NY’ers
here’s one that doesn’t parse words…let’s work to get him elected.

• One Down, Seven To Go. Fight Back NY is working to replace a select
group of New York State Senators who voted against marriage equality
last December. Their targets are both Democratic and Republican and so
far they are 1 for 1.
The next target is Sen. Bill Stachowski (D) of Buffalo who is
in a tight Democratic primary. Fight Back NY says that Stachoski has
“voted against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) New
Yorkers at every turn, whether it’s nondiscrimination protections or
marriage equality.” I love that this organization takes marriage
equality right to the source. Fire the bums!

• I am NO ONE’S Accessory. Teen Vogue poses the question “is a gbf (gay
best friend) the new must-have accessory for teen girls”.
WTF?
Who
decided to use the word accessory to describe friendships?
Though
I appreciate that the article tries to school schoolgirls by saying “no
one deserves to be treated like a passing fad or arm candy”, the idea
that the friendship between a straight girl and a gay guy is a fad gets
me going.
Apparently, I am not the only one annoyed.
Richard
Lawson at Gawker has a few choice words. Now when I
look at my straight female bf I am going to wonder if she thinks of me
as her latest Prada handbag.
I feel cheap…someone hug me.

It’s All Gray To Me. This weekend the highly anticipated film The Kids Are All Right premieres in the
major cities.
The film follows an established lesbian couple with
two children whose sperm donor shows up at the request of there
adult-ish children. The film has big budget stars (Julianne Moore,
Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo ), a lesbian writer and a bunch of
buzz. The question is, will lesbians be offended?
SPOILER ALERT.
In
one of the major plot points, Julianne Moore’s character has an affair
with the sperm donor, obviously creating drama. Though I am not a
lesbian, a mother or a female (and maybe I shouldn’t step into the
debate) but I feel like sexuality is much more gray then we typically
want to see in film.
I understand our need to see positive
representations of our lives in mainstream media but I also believe that
there isn’t anything wrong with seeing ourselves in ways that are true
to life. Our lives are not always sterile, ideological, political
statements. sometimes we are messy, unlikeable, and unpredictable. I
want the depictions of our lives to have the same range that our
straight counterparts enjoy.
Paint us with all the colors from the
crayon box, please. But that is just my opinion.

look out for a video interview on Sunday!!
• Who proofed this
sh*t. I really don’t have much to say except major fail, editors.
Their fail is our guilty enjoyment. You can read the article but why? The best part is the
headline.

• Sing out, Louise. Fox Interactive created an iTunes app to celebrate all that is Glee .
The
app gives you access to a few songs featured on the show and using your
iPhone or iPad you can sing along with the cast. The
performance is recorded and then you can share (if you are that brave).
The Washington Boys from unicornbooty.com have mixed it up with the
Glee app and filmed the results for all of us to enjoy. The mash up of
tunes and hot boys is definitely summer fun. Oh, and blond boy in the
black overalls… how you doing!
