Ricky Martin wigs out; Madonna
celebrates Malawi pardon
President Obama
declares June LGBT Month. The White House released a statement Friday announcing June as Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month.
In
the presidential proclamation, Mr. President recognized the
“immeasurable contributions of LGBT Americans” and encouraged citizens
to continue the struggle for equal rights.
“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK
OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the
authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United
States, do hereby proclaim June 2010 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
Transgender Pride Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month
by fighting prejudice and discrimination in their own lives and
everywhere it exists,” he said.
Happy
Pride Month!
Madonna celebrates Malawi pardon. The Kaballa
Queen took to her a blog Monday to thank the thousands of fans who
joined her campaign to release the Malawian couple sentenced to 14 years hard labor for
their homosexuality. Shortly following the couple’s sentencing, the
singer launched a vocal campaign to help free them. She called on fans
to sign a petition calling for the couple’s release.
“In the last
week, over 30,000 of you added your name to mine calling for the release
of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalangal – the Malawi couple
sentenced to 14 years hard labour for the ‘crime’ of homosexuality. With
incredible joy, I am writing to share with you that Malawi President
Bingu wa Mutharika has ordered their release,” She wrote.
Human
rights activists protest jailing of gay couple
Although they are
out of prison, homosexuality remains illegal in Malawi and activists are
searching for a place of refuge for the couple.
“Though they are
free from Prison, sadly their safety and future in Malawi is still
unknown. I hope this is just the beginning of our work together,”
Madonna added.
Madonna has two adopted children from the
African country, Mercy and David. She is currently building a school for
girls in Malawi.
Madonna and
the baaaabbbiieeezz!
How you doin’? Talkshow host Wendy Williams is set to host the New
York City Council’s annual Pride celebration on June 15.
The
former Hip Hop DJ was recently under fire for her insensitive behavior
toward her gay audience. Like, refusing draq queen Erickatoure Aviance a
seat in her studio audience due to the strict “no costume policy” and
her frequent use of the phrase “no homo.”
That
said, Williams is no bigot and, in fact, she is said to be “very
pro-gay” but it might be a good idea if she thought before she spoke.
Even
so, council officials say that Wendy’s blabber mouth brutal honesty is exactly what the celebration needs.
“I think
Wendy represents in a lot ways, in her honesty and in her directness,
the type of conversation that you need to constantly engage in if you’re
going to keep society moving to a place that you are united and not
divided by our otherness,” council speaker Christine Quin told the Advocate .
Hmmm…. We’ll see
What
ban?! Thirty Russian activists celebrated Moscow Pride Saturday in
spite of Mayor Yury Luzkhov ban on the self-described “satanic” happening.
In
previous years, organizers have held demonstrations against the mayor‘s
orders – all of which were quickly and violently dispersed by Russian
police. This year’s gay parade was the first to take place without
violence or arrests.
One step in the right direction!
