The
production people, such as the stunt coordinator, have to take a bow
for an extended chase segment, with Chris Brown running and Matt Dillon
doing the chasing, but the audience, as in many movies, have to suspend
belief. Chris runs and jumps over, in and under cars, goes through a
plate glass window, slides down buildings, leaps over escalators and on
and on and winds up without a scratch. Needless to say Dillon and his
partner, jay Hernandez, as the detectives start out with a shiny,
without a mark on it, car and after endless chases still doesn't have a
mark on it.
"Takers" is a summer
heist/action/double cross film that has an annoying music soundtrack but
personable actors. There really isn't anything new or original in the
picture but it is fast moving, edited sharply and has one or two twists
that you may not see coming.
The bad guys, played by Brown, Michael Ealy, Paul Walker, Idris Elba and Hayden Christensen are smart, well dressed and live in upscale
homes, who plan a foolproof heist once a year and the picture opens
with their latest. Tip "T.I" Harris, the sixth member of the gang has
just been released after serving 5 years in prison having been shot, and
caught, at a previous heist. He is proud of the fact that he didn't
squeal on his partners and now was ready to make up for lost time, even
though money from each heist while he was doing time was put aside for
him.
Add
a few Russian criminals, a drug addicted sister, played by Marianne
Jean-Baptiste, of one of the thieves, have the girlfriend, Zoe Saldana, be the ex-girlfriend of Harris and now the girlfriend of Ealy,
not to forget the two detectives with Dillon being divorced and not the
best father and Hernandez having a special needs child, there is a lot
of territory to cover.
The climax of the movie revolves around the latest heist and those who survive and those who don't. It is a fast moving picture that only slows down when the screenplay gets into the personal life of some of the characters. There really isn't anything new here but it is a good summer action film that will hold your attention for the 107 minutes it takes to play out
