Ten years ago I was on the verge of
being homeless when my friend Perry mentioned to me that I might be eligible for
subsidized housing and it was the best thing that has ever happened to me in my
senior years. I have written and posted pictures about this Paradise called
Gateway Terrace. I've told you about the Olympic sized pool, barber/beauty shop,
country store, free baked goods give-a-aways plus free vegetables from local
markets, library on the grounds, social events, etc.
Now requirements differ from State to State and, sometimes, even
city to city, but once you are approved for any government housing you can move
anywhere within the system.
Due to the economy of today there is usually a 2-3 year wait to
get into a place. As it is Gateway Terrace isn't even taking any applications
right now. I would advise you to find out if you are eligible and put in an
application where you live--who knows what will happen three years down the
road?
To be eligible here you must 1) be
over 62 years of age 2) earn, and have, less than $14,000 a year for a single
and $20,000 for a couple--there are other categories that could make you
eligible, such as having, needing a caretaker, etc.
I pay $265 a month rent, electricity
included, for a 3rd (top) floor large one bedroom apartment, no 'attached'
neighbors, with east, south and north views and am provided with cable TV (60
stations including HBO and Showtime) for $28 a month and a maintenance crew like
no other.
Having worked 48 years, paying taxes, helping others, now in my
70s and recently having had that aorta valve replacement I am glad that I can
live an independent life in such a beautiful place.
For those of you who are older and/or
cash strapped whether single or a couple, gay or nongay, I suggest you look into
HUD and what may be available to you but do it now as the system takes time and,
as I mentioned, some places have a 2-3 year waiting list.
