Watercooler: The RNC’s kinky little habit
03.30.2010 12:11pm EDT ,

R epublican National Committee funds pay for the darnedest things. The Daily Caller reported the RNC shelled out
almost $2,000 to pay a tab at “Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed
nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.” While
Monday’s report cited RNC chair Michael Steele as the big spender, it
was later revealed to be staffer Erik Brown, who is now out of a job. On Monday,
Late
Monday night, the RNC released a statement to The New York Times .
“The committee has taken
appropriate steps to address the issues relating to the reimbursement
of certain expenses. First, as reported, the expenditure in question
will be recouped by the RNC. Second, appropriate personnel actions have
been taken and accounting and reimbursement processes are being revised
to ensure that such an action cannot reoccur. We recognize the
difficulty this incident has caused and assure our members and
supporters that any necessary and proper remediation is being
implemented immediately,” wrote Doug Heye, the RNC communications
director.
What I find most disgusting about this whole debacle is
the simple fact that the RNC was fine and dandy about paying for a night
on the town … until the media found the expense reports.

There
really isn’t a good way to transition from bondage clubs to Fred
Phelps. Nevertheless, the notorious reverend and his family are back
in the news. In a move that feels like a colossal cruel joke on the
universe, a court ruled in Phelps’ favor. On Friday, Court of Appeals
for the Fourth Circuit ordered the father of a fallen Marine to pay
$16,510 to Fred Phelps. Why? Because those are the court costs Phelps
incurred after he was sued for picketing the Marine’s funeral. In this
instance, justice has not been served.
As much as I don’t want to
see a dime of my money go to Westboro Baptists, this family needs
help . Please give them a hand.

Oklahoma’s
Legislature’s rush to take away rights from gays and lesbians resulted
in an embarrassing error . According to a story in The Oklahoma Daily , the newspaper of the
University of Oklahoma, the bill was supposed to remove protections from
discrimination for gays and lesbians, but ended up taking away
protections for race and religion. Oops.
“Gay and lesbian citizens
should be upset because someone tried to take their rights away, but
minority groups should be concerned that their rights have already been
voted to be taken away by the Senate,” Oklahoma Senate Minority Leader
Andrew Rice told Oklahoma Daily. “People who consider themselves Jewish,
black, even Christians should be outraged.”
