The Secret In Their Eyes won the Oscar for
Best Foreign Film this past March. It is a film from Argentina that takes
place, mainly, in Buenos AiresCampanella who has done a lot of TV in America. and was directed, co-written, co-produced and edited by Juan Jose
First, and foremost, in this film is the
exquisite acting by each and every member of the cast from the leads
like Ricardo Darin, Soledad Villamil and Pablo Rago to supporting players Javier Godino and Guuillermo Francella. Not one actor makes a
false step and each develops your interest in them.
The movie is a combination of a love story and
a mystery story, each given equal time and eventually blending into
one. The screenplays jump back and forth between now and the 1970s while
at the same time looks at a rape and murder both in a true and a
fictionalized version. All of this is followed without any problem and
as serious as it may sound, which it is, there is also appropriate humor
throughout. I didn't see the resolution to the murder coming but I did
know the outcome of the love tale.
There is a very impressive chase filmed in a
large soccer stadium that won't be easily forgotten and giving the
directer credit for the way this segment was filmed and edited by Campanella one must also point out
a few badly filmed scenes involving close ups of two actors.
I did like this film but would have picked "A
Prophet" over it to win the Oscar but then I don't think The Hurt
Locker deserved its Oscar as best movie of the year.
