I feel my becoming a resident of the Gateway Terrace Apartments complex has been
one of the best things that has happened to me.
On June 1 I start my eleventh year here. The year before I moved in I was on
the verge of homelessness, which was completely my own fault and recklessness,
but the bottom line is I applied and was accepted here.
The Gateway Terrace
Apartments are a HUD assisted living residence. I currently live in what is
called a large one bedroom apartment which I moved into after 5 years of living
here. I overlook one of the many water ways, pay a rent based on 1/3 of my
income minus medical deductions. Electricity is included plus I get a $14 credit
on my phone bill and get 60 cable stations, including HBO and Showtime, for $28,
just to mention a few 'perks involved.
I do not understand
how anyone who lives here can complain but you get a group of people and there
will always be the few who make trouble for the many.
At the beginning of
April we received a letter from Lisa, our administrator of TheA Gateway Terrace
Apartments, that there would be a special General Assembly meeting on April 14
in the Community Room at 11:30 AM which would be led by Gretchen Schitter, a top
administrator from the home office of Westminister Retirement Community.
The letter stated,
"...a small group of dissentients trying to disturb our peaceful daily living."
One of the main disturbing elements was that this small group of people were
complaining too many of 'them' were moving in, meaning Hispanics and Blacks,
using vulgar terms.
The letter said,
"...this will not be an open forum due to time constraints." We were asked to
put in writing, "...all questions, comments, praise or complaints," and submit
them by April 10.
In the 10 years I have
only attended one General Assembly meeting which is held every month and that
was the first month I lived here. As a rule it is held at 10 AM which is too
early for me and sparsely attended with little being accomplished.
This was one meeting I
was not going to miss!!! And I would write my comments to Gretchen
