It's not that Kate Winslet is old but she looks a lot more mature than
Leonardo DiCaprio that their being cast as husband and wife in "Revolutionary
Road" doesn't work making the film ring false. As he gets older (in real life)
his face is getting rounder and retains that babyish look.
As the story of a marriage in the 1950s with the dream back then of a house
in the suburbs, 2 kids, husband working and commuting to and from the city and
one partner having too many expectations of their partner, Revolutionary Road
seems to be the early years of Martha and George from Who's Afraid Of Virginia
Woolf.
Though both Kate and Leonardo invest a lot of skill in their portrayals they
seem to be so mismatched, except sexually, that you wonder how they lasted long
enough to have kids and make a life together. As much as you want to feel for
and with this couple each seems to be in a different movie following different
plot lines.
I am sure Winslet will get an Oscar nomination as there really isn't much
competition in Best Actress category--aside from Streep I really can't see any
competition yet besides, possibly, Kristin Scott Thomas, Penelope Cruz and Anne
Hathaway in a not very interesting category so far.
With Sean Penn, Frank Langella, Brad Pitt and Clint Eastward almost sure bets
Leonardo might get the fifth spot but there are a couple of others who could
knock him out of the running.
At first I didn't recognize Kathy Bates as she has lost a lot of weight plus
she is such a good actress she changes the way her face looks and her voice
sounds. She is just one in a strong cast of supporting categories. David Harbour
makes you wish he was playing the Leonardo role while it is Michael Shannon, I
think, playing the son of Kathy Bates should certainly get a nod as a best
supporting actor. The cast playing coworkers andIt's not that Kate Winslet is

Frank (Leo) all do excellent jobs with the exception of Zoe Kazan is
miscast.
There are two additional scenes at the end which should have been cut and
there are too many scenes that Sam Mendes stages as theatre pieces. There are
two sexs scenes that are almost laughable and one that is!
The last scenes that Kate and/or Leonardo appear in should be emotionally
involving for the audience but it just doesn't happen. This is not as strong a
film as it should be, not due to the actors, but due to the director.
As the first picture I have seen in 2009 I know it will not be the worst or
the best of the year but one of many that I will be glad I have seen but won't
want to see again.
