Every
year there are one or two movies that critics rally around, give rave
reviews and say is is a 'must see' film. I, usually, fall for the trap,
go see the movie and feel 'taken' again.
I
really went to see "Precious" this afternoon expecting to be moved, to
cry, to see a first rate drama. All the news, reviews and articles, and
they have been all over, made this seem to be THE movie of the year
and, of course, with Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry adding their kudos
endorsement how could it miss.
I didn't
see the movie they saw. I saw, what seemed to be a very slow moving
film with bad directing and poor editing saved by good, and in two
cases, excellent acting. Gabourey Sidibe who has to carry the movie on
her shoulders being in most, if not all, scenes impresses with her
performance. Sadly, I don't think there is a future for her in films
after reaching somewhat of a peak here because of Hollywood and the
public's expectations.
The main reason
to see this movie, and the main reason it's gotten and is getting all
the buzz, is due to Mo'Nique. From her first scene she sets up the
hate the audience feels for her for most of the picture and in her last
monologue turns the audience around not because she is less hateful but
because you understand why she is the way she is and why she treated
Precious the way she did.
"Precious" is
melodrama, soap, drama and not quite cohesive. Everyone from beginner
to veteran in front of the camera are professional but most behind the
scene aren't.
The main reason to see
this movie is Mo'Nique's raw, from the gut, performance and the major
debut of Gabourney Sidibe but be prepared for a l-o-n-g seeming movie
which doesn't last even 2 hours but seems to be endless.
