Playing Tourist and a New Restaurant

I told Allen I wanted to eat someplace different, someplace  new and someplace on the water and, last, but not least, a little
upscale. It wasn't as easy finding a place that fit all the
requirements because we have eaten lunch in many restaurants and there
aren't that many on the water and those that are, are very upscale.

We
drove under the bridge on Oakland Park but the 2-3 restaurants that use
to be there are gone. After that we drove north on A1A up to Commercial
Boulevard glancing at the Deli Den, The Noodle Shop and Grandma's
French Bakery but none were on the water so we went to the end of the
Boulevard to the Pompano Beach pier. There are a couple of restaurants
there but we had already eaten at the Aruba and that was the only one
directly on the water.

We
drove back to Grandma's french bakery but since it was after 2 they
were closed for lunch and wouldn't open for dinner for another couple
of hours. Weeliminated the Deli Den as I was going to my primary doctor
tomorrow and he was near a great deli and I planned to have a sandwich
there--after I weighed in at the doctor's!  LOL So we drove back to the pier.

THE ENTRANCE TO THE PIER

We
decided to go to the Village Grill which was right next door to the
Aruba. It was close enough to the beach with lots of windows. They did
have sitting outside but that is not my thing.

ENTERING THE VILLAGE GRILL

We
sat ourselves in a booth and almost immediately a waitress brought us
menus. Looking over the items there wasn't anything really different
except one item caught Allen's eye and that was a chicken and broccoli penne dish. At that point a waiter came over and asked what we wanted to
drink. I ordered coffee and Allen a diet coke. The waiter asked if we
had gotten the 'special' menu. We hadn't so he gave us one--yes, one
for the both of us--really the only mistake made. We looked it over and
the 'Blue Plate Special', roast pork, caught our eye. After the waiter
described it we both orderedthat special.

THE VIEW FROM INSIDE THE VILLAGE GRILL

The blue plate special consisted of 3-4 thick slices of pork, homemade mashed potatoes
out of red potatoes with the skin mixed in, delicious, and an
assortment of fresh par boiled vegetables consisting of red and green
peppers, cucumbers, onions, zucchini and pea pods. It was a full,
tasty, attractive looking plate of food.

After
we finished we discussed dessert, asked the waiter what they had and
decided to share the fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream and a plate
of 3 different mousses: passion fruit, strawberry and chocolate.

It
took a bit too long but we realized that it took awhile to set up and
decorate the plates, plus I am sure there were maybe two people in the
kitchen doing all the cooking, and though the brownie dish was
ordinary, good but ordinary, the mousse platter was different and stood
out.

When we got the check I had to laugh as the two desserts and two drinks cost more than the main courses!!!

It
was a nice restaurant, good service, good food, added to our feeling of
being a tourist for a couple of hours and a feeling of, 'We deserved
it."

Outside the restaurant door in the
center of the junction of Commercial Boulevard and the road to the pier
was a sculpture that captured the whole area and the feeling of the
ocean on land.

And now back to the real world of 2-4-1s, coupons and discounts.
