I am not by nature a 'political animal' and it is
mainly due to James over the past couple of years that I have become more aware
of politics.
In two ways this documentary is more up to date than
when it was beingMcFarlane who recently died at the
age of 54. He is one of the 'talking heads' in this film standing up for what he
believes in and not shy about telling it. This, in a way, is a fitting tribute
to an activist who did so much good talking out against those who have done so
much harm. made. Yesterday I posted a memorial
to Roger
Also at the time the director, Kirby Dick, was
making this film he could not know that a week before his film was being shown
across the nation that one of his subjects, Charlie Crist,
would be running for the Senate.
Is Crist gay? His first wife and he
divorced after 6 months of marriage and she now has a female partner. Two men
claim to have had affairs with Charlie and 'disappeared' from Florida while he
was running for Governor. A bar gay owner
claims he 'knows' Crist is gay. Kirby Dick does a lot
of finger pointing and if it is true that 'where there is smoke there is fire'
than Charlie is 'flaming'--sorry, couldn't help that!
Does it matter if Crist is gay? Or ex-Mayor Ed Koch of
New York is gay? Larry Craig of Idaho and bathroom fame? David Dreier, a
California Rep? Or if other politicians are gay but in the closet? Yes, when
they help make and/or pass anti gay laws or in Koch's case does nothing about
AIDS when it first appeared on the scene and NYC needed money. It was Charlie
Crist who helped pass Proposition 2, an anti gay marriage bill, in the last election and has backed
the no gay adoption law in the State.
There are lots of finger
pointing, interviews with ex-lovers, ex-wives, tricks, various reports, finger
wagging at editors, reporters, newspapers, talk shows hosts for not reporting on
such an important item, especially regarding Crist who is often mentioned as a possible
presidential candidate in 2012. Yes it would be great to have a president who is
gay but certainly not one in the closet.
This is an interesting documentary that will introduce many gay
heroesRosen, the aforementioned Roger, etc.
They will meet, and hear, Mary Cheney who is seen as a traitor to the gay world
but, unfortunately the people who should see this film probably won't--and that
includes YOU and everyone reading this. such as Larry Kramer, Barney Frank,
Hillary
Should someone be outed or should they be allowed to
come out when they want or are forced to or are found in a compromising
situation? Should a politician be outed if he/she is harming the people they are
representing or the community they will turn to
when/if they are outed? Are 90% closeted politicians Republicans? And if so,
why?
Evidence is presented to
the jury (film audience) and though in some of the cases it is circumstantial
evidence in other cases there is very little doubt of the person's guilt. It is a chance for you to be the judge.
