Dream Team Chosen to Produce Oscars
The creative team behind “Dreamgirls,” the movie, is getting a shot at the Oscar show. Laurence
Mark, who produced the musical film in 2006, was named producer of the
81st annual Academy Awards ceremony on Wednesday, while Bill
Condon, the “Dreamgirls” screenwriter and director, was named
executive producer. The Oscar show is scheduled for broadcast on Feb. 22 on ABC. A primary goal, Mr. Mark said, will be to bring a wider range of movies into the
presentation, whose host has not been named. “The Oscars should, of course,
celebrate excellence,” Mr. Mark said. “But we also think it might be fun to
celebrate the films of the year in general.” About 32 million viewers, a record
low, watched this year’s broadcast, which Jon
Stewart hosted.
