Watercooler: Lucas calls out gay leadership

* Hey Beau? What’s the problem? Sure my feelings toward Beau Breedlove are slightly unprofessional, but I’m surprised he’s part of the effort to recall his former boss/lovah/friend Mayor Sam Adams . Are Breedlove’s motives purely political, or is there some personal tinge? Beau, still want to interview ya! Seriously. I’m easy to find.
* The Army’s schizoid week . Last week was a public relations mess for the Army . Sybil would have been proud. One day DADT is being ignored. The very next that is forgotten, and gay soldiers are told their participation in the year long DADT study will be through a third party. Their bigoted peers ? Oh, they can say what they want. The law likes them. How all of this will turn out is unknown, but for our military brothers and sisters please make sure you stay in touch with the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network . Support is more than critical in a time when the rule enforcers have no idea how to follow their own regulations.
* If you have the desire to connect your scandal to Jewish history, please don’t . I understand the Catholic Church feels under siege, but that doesn’t mean it’s time for bone head historical analysis. Pope Benedict XVI’s personal preacher said, in a Good Friday homily, that accusations against the church are no different from the “collective violence†against Jews. Triple sigh. Not even going to waste space refuting this. At least the Vatican had enough good sense to step away from preacher man’s rank stupidity.
* Look at what Mayor Parker did . Remember when a few of our readers gave Annise Parker grief because she didn’t want to be the “gay mayor†of Houston? Last week she signed an executive order updating the city’s 12 year non-discrimination policy . Transgender city employees are now protected. A question to those in the anti-Parker camp: still want to call her a sellout?
* Which books influenced you? A few weeks back blogger Tyler Cowen listed the 10 books that influenced him (different from your favorites), and asked others to do the same. Here are mine—no order. What about yours? Oxherding Tale , Narrative of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave , Written on the Body , Literary Theory: AnIntroduction , Errors and Expectations , Afro-American Literature in the 20th Century: The Achievement of Intimacy , Go Down, Moses , Blood Meridian , The Closing of the American Mind , and Words in the Mourning Time .
* Michael Lucas wants to know what the problem is . Much opinionated porn star, and entrepreneur, Michael Lucas wants to know why he faces discrimination from the high-powered lavender set. Actually he knows the reason. Shame about his chosen profession. The ironic part is that while folk have pubic embarrassment, in private they are grooving to his stuff (anything with Brian Bodine or Corey Cade is worth checking out). Hard to disagree when Lucas says this: “Super gays and super lesbians don’t like our diversity. They want to streamline us as gym going, straight-acting professionals, sanitized for your protection. Anderson Cooper will be their perfect role model, assuming he ever comes out of the closet.†The anti-diversity rhetoric will ramp up as gay pride season gets closer. People will write editorials how marriage and lube would be inalienable rights now if only the “freaks†stayed out of sight.
* Gay voters in Washington, DC have it good . Welcome to a new day in politics. Washington, DC’s city council chairman Vincent Gray says he’s going to challenge Mayor Adrian Fenty . Both are top notch when it comes to gay concerns. There’s some scuttlebutt about Fenty’s “arrogance,†but if I were voting the mayor would get my support (full disclosure: we went to the same college ). Hard to find a fault with a guy who signed a marriage rights bill.
* The cast of Glee was at the White House this morning . Sure President Obama drags his feet when it comes to anything gay and substantial, but give his team props for knowing something about optics. The cast of Glee , that all out queen friendly show, performed at the White House Easter egg roll. Twenty bucks this was the First Lady’s doing. Now if she can only get her man to be more proactive about DADT.
