If it is true that this is Joaquin Phoenix's last movie than it definitely is
a loss because he is an intriguing actor, always interesting to watch. He does a
little rap but if he hopes to make it being a rapper it is obvious he will be
back to acting soon.
In "Two Lovers" he is the man/child torn between
two women. One is Sandra, played by Vinessa Shaw, in an arranged meeting by his
mother and a merger between the parents. The other is Michelle, a woman/child
played by Gwyneth Paltrow. The latter's appeal completely escapes me and as
an actress leaves me cold.
Leonard, (Joaquin) is bi-polar, has had a breakdown and when the movie opens
is trying to commit suicide a second time. He lives at home, as does Sandra,
works for his father and this pair seems the better match. Michelle is being
kept by an older, married man, does drugs, still goes to the clubs and doesn't
seem to have grown up.
Isabella Rossellini, playing Joaquin's concerned,
doting mother brings more to her role than the script indicates while Moni Moshonov playing Leonard's father doesn't
fit into this film in any way.
The film seems to be wanting to recreate what was
known as 'kitchen drama' in the 50s but doesn't quite make it and doesn't quite
fit in as a film in the present time.
As I have found with many of the current love stories the audience isn't
drawn into the feelings of the characters and, consequently, don't feel the
sadness and/or joy that may happen to any of them.
The ending doesn't really come as a surprise and is a little far fetched not to mention
depressing!
