Nia Vardalos is looking really good but it also looks like she is a one trick pony
and the trick was "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". Her last movie, "Connie
and Carla", which I enjoyed mainly because of Toni Collete's
performance, bombed at the box office as this film will also.
Her love interest, Alexis Georgoulis, has a hot body and a good looking face while another actor playing a IHOP executive has a stand out hairy chest!! LOL
There
are references to Zorba the Greek and Never On Sunday and, of course,
gorgeous Greece scenery including ancient ruins and modern locations
along with Greek dancing and breaking of plates.
You
know from the moment she sees, and dislikes, Alexis that they will end
up together just as you know how each tourist on the bus tour she is in
charge of will act, react and come to love her in the end.
In a sense the surprise here is Richard Dreyfuss,
an Oscar winning actor, who has had more than his share of problems,
turning up as a widow missing his wife--which only means she will
appear in a scene making everything right (played by Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks's wife, both responsible for Nia's big success)--a comedian who helps Vardalos with her problems. He does a fine job but I had to wonder if it was a
job just for the money as it certainly doesn't add anything to his
career.
Is it a bad movie? Certainly not as bad as the reviewers would have you believe.
It's a pleasant film that won't add or take anything away from your
life and if you come across it relax and watch it--you can't go wrong
with the ruins!
