www.drugs.com it tells you everything and anything about all drugs
that you may want to know--it, also, has a discussion board with many
different subjects. I asked about my tranquillizer, Lorazepem, and how
to manage it--here are some of the responses I got!
This was my initial posting:
I am new on this site and, honestly, after having an aorta valve replacemnet
done on July 21 and having stopped smoking on that date after 60 years I have
been having a real bad, hard time--my doc prescribed lorazepam for
anxiety and to get some sleep--have been taking it for a month now--still can't
figure out how long it takes to 'kick' in and how long the effects last.
I am either walking around like a zombie or wanting to sleep
very badly during the day but unable to nap or full of anx!
Can anyone be of help or lead me to info regarding
drug.

"The lorazepam or
any of the benzodiazepines family will make you drowsy and make you feel like a
zombie.LOL.
If you take them during the day I never found a
way around it.
I was RX a benzo for anxiety,It worked for
awhile but then stopped working.
I need to tel you that
benzo's are meant for short term use, are doctors forget to tell us that.they
should not be used for over two weeks if taken everyday.
I
don't know if your doctor wants you on them for you heart condition.
But please be careful the rebound effect is horrible when you
stop taking them.
I know what it is like to have anxiety,I
wish i could tell you something that would help you more.
but
just so you know what your getting into just look up benzo withdrawal on the
net.I'm sure someone else will post and maybe they will be more help.
good luck let us know if we can help."

"While you are describing a relatively small dose for ativan please realize that these benzos can sneak up on you so fast it will
literally spin you around. I am serious. I was on them for 25 years
plus. Benzos are more addictive than lots of the street drugs out
there. Not saying they are always bad, just please respect what these
drugs can do to you. And when you decide to stop them it's a horror. ENOUGH SAID. Done
preaching to you. I just hate to see anyone have
to go through what I did with benzos.
The most effective way for benzos to be RXd is taking a small
dose (that is relative to what our tolerance is) 2-3 times spaced throughout the
day and a final dose of whatever at bedtime. The small doses during the day are
for ongoing general anxiety disorder and then the dose before bedtime is
obviously just for that. You would take a larger dose at bedtime, but the
smaller doses during the day should not put you to sleep if it's RXd properly.
If your being put to sleep then the daytime dose should be reduced a little. For
example one could be taking .25mg or .5mg 2-3 times during the day and then
1mg-2mg at bedtime. This is pretty standard for prescribing benzos. Please be
careful. Good luck and God bless. "

"We don't set out to scare people intentionally. But quite
honestly if that is what it takes to at least make someone aware of the dangers
associated with benzo dependency then it was worth the scare. I really believe
that way. Some people need to take benzos but it's important that they don't
dismiss the seriousness of what they are doing. Please be careful.
I am not going to dispute what dose the dr
is telling you to take. I don't know your complete medical history, plus I
wouldn't second guess the dr over a dosing question like this. But my experience
is that you take the lowest possible doses during the day, enough to keep you
from having any panic attacks but not enough to make you sleepy, then take a
large enough dose to go ahead and get some sleep at night.
It shouldn't be taking you hours after your
bedtime dose to get to sleep. Either you are not ready to go to bed yet when you
are taking that last dose or else it isn't high enough ... its one or the other.
You are probably not ready for bed yet when you are taking the last dose. Plus
you are most likely so uptight about the medication itself that you are too
tensed up at night for it to work without taking a huge dose. Try to relax some
and the medication will work better at night I am almost sure.
You should be ready to go to sleep when you
take the bedtime dose. Don't be sitting up and watching tv or doing anything but
getting ready to go to sleep. It won't just knock you out. It's only supposed to
AID you in getting to sleep. So it's important that you do the right activities
that are conducive to going to sleep. Don't eat right before bedtime. Take a hot
shower or bath an hour or so before you take the ativan. It helps you
to relax. Think about what you are doing when you take the medication. Are you
doing things that might be keeping your brain running when you should be
shutting everything down???"
With my addictive personality and
having taken lorazepem now since Sept. 4 I am concerned about the above
and will have to speak to my primary about this, :O)
