After having a 13
ounce cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onions and ketchup there was
nothing to do but go and have ice cream, right? Right! So off we went to
Jaxon's Ice Cream parlor in
Dania between Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale.
Jaxson's has been in business for
54 years and, if I remember correctly, I was there when it first opened.
We made a trip from Miami Beach to what was the 'country' then. They
have a full menu but they have always been known, primarily, for their
home made ice cream and freshly prepared toppings all made daily on the
premises. The restaurant is filled with all types of American
memorabilia from license plates representing
every State to old
fashioned 'penny' candy---which isn't a penny anymore!
After each of us had devoured that
burger and split a large order of fries we really weren't that hungry
so the 'kitchen sink' was out of the question. I do recall that in the
80s 4 of us did share one and it was enough for all of us! That was then
and this is now.
Allen had the
Turtle ($11.50) which consisted of 3 scoops of ice cream, butterscotch
and fudge syrups, whipped cream, pecans and then topped with more fudge,
pecans and whipped cream.
I, behaving myself, (stop laughing!!!) just
ordered vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup ($8.75) only to find that
it was 3 heaping scoops of ice cream with the sauce--I had said no
whipped cream--remember I was being a 'good' boy--with sauce over it
plus a monkey dish of it on the side.
The ice cream was excellent though after the
lunch we had the portion was too much--did I say that????--and, of
course, will go back again but not too soon.
It's a good thing we don't eat like this
everyday--forget the cost--I don't think we could afford the doctor
bills and the high cholesterol!!
