In the past few years some of the old pros,
Oscar winners and our favorites, have 'come back' to show why they are
so highly esteemed in, and by, the acting profession earning an
additional Oscar nomination by such as Julie Christie and Peter O'Toole.
Today I saw another Oscar winner making a bid for another nomination, a
man who has made over 100 movies and always comes through, whether the
movie is a minor or major event, and that actor is Michael Caine.
This is the star
of Alfie, The Ipcress File,
Get Carter, who can still make you smile, shed a tear, make you stiffen
up in your seat, anticipate what will happen. No one can be as cold, or
as warm, as Michael Caine and he uses both, plus many other feelings, to keep you engrossed, and
believe, in his character.
I am not into violence and this is a very
violent film with nothing held back on the screen. I recently read where
Caine compared it to "Clock Work Orange" but trust me there in no "Singing in
the Rain" here. It looks at the horror of hoodlums in a notorious real
English project that rule the area with fear. While it has the cliches
of "Death Wish", "Gran Torino"--the old man vigilante--and that ilk, I don't
remember the last time I jumped out of my seat!
Yes, the first time director,Daniel Barber,
does fall for first time director's tricks such as filling the screen up
with a goldfish bowl and watching the two fish and other strange,
'artsy' shots but he has a strong cast and uses them wisely with Sean
Harris a stand out as an example of the living dead walking among us.
The scene between him and Caine is riveting.
Unfortunately it seems this film is being
'dumped' and may quickly be forgotten though Michael Caine's performance is the best I have seen this year and should get that
nomination.
A MUST SEE PERFORMANCE!!!
