A movie like "What Happens In Vegas" makes me wonder why Cameron Diaz is one of the highest paid actresses in the business--as far as I can recall she has been in only 2 big hits; "There's Something About Mary" where she is known for the 'gel' in her hair and "My Best Friend's Wedding" where Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett were the stars. She certainly didn't do a good job of acting in either "Gangs Of New York" or "In Her Shoes" and I don't see this movie going on her resume. Yes, she has a good body, looks good in and out of clothes but I can't see her getting $20M a picture just for that.
This is my first time seeing Ashton Kutcher and he really doesn't impress me. He looks as if he should be/is tall but there is no way of telling. From one angle he can look like a 'hunk' and another as ordinary as they come.
In a romantic comedy there has to be chemistry between the two leads but in this movie there is none along with very little romance and even less comedy. The director, Tim Vaughn, and the writer, Dana Fox, try all sorts of comedy from slapstick to visual to crude trying everything but a pie in the face. Diaz is game for anything, including losing her dignity, but doesn't get a laugh doing toilet humor, falling down, getting drunk or any other attempts to get a laugh.
The best pal of each of the leads, Rob Corddry (as Ashton's best friend) and Lake Bell (as Diaz'z best friend) both fall flat with their lines and on their faces.
Treat Williams and Dennis Miller don't really have much to do but don't embarrass themselves nor bring anything to the movie except familiar faces as does the actor playing Diaz's boss--his name escapes me but the first is Dennis and he was recently a regular on one of the Law & Order series.
The only redeeming feature, for me, is the one scene where the background song is one of my favorites, "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" but that's not enough to recommend this movie.
While trying to be a madcap comedy of the 40s "What Happens In Vegas" just shows the skills it took to make those back then so good.
As for this movie, I could almost tell from the promos that it was going to be a silly "nothing", but that sort of movie sometimes surprises everyone. They are often popular in the summer "drive-in or Saturday night date" season and/or will acquire a following long after it's initial run.
I am not a Diaz fan, however I do not dislike her and I will not avoid a movie that she is in.
