"Hancock" and Will Smith should have/could have been much more fun and funnier. There is no doubt that Smith is a charmer who can ingratiate his characters to the point no matter how bad they may be you still love him.
Here he is a super hero who has no idea how he got that way nor does he care. He has no respect for himself or anyone around him including children. He is dirty, almost homeless, an alcoholic and causes more damage to property, and people, than necessary. Under circumstances would anyone ever mistake him for a super hero.
And then Jason Bateman who is saved by Smith, and happens to be a public relations man, decides to repay him by remaking his image. Though there are a few laughs during this transformation there could have/should have deeper, better laughs instead of a smile now and then.
As many know I believe Charlize Theron gave one of the greatest, if not the greatest, performances on screen as Aileen Wuornes in "Monster". Even now, after many other roles, I am always startled when I first see her in a film. She is absolutely beautiful as she is in this movie. As I very seldom give away important plot points let's just say she is not the typical housewife here though she plays one and does a good job. She and Bateman have a child who hero worships Hancock but he, like the villain, really are there just to fill in time in the script.
The last half hour is a jumble, has a rush to end feeling and seems to try to make it as incomprehensible as possible. It is almost as if the scriptwriters were just trying to confuse the audience because they themselves didn't have a good explanation for what went on.
Hancock, the movie, and Hancock, the character, could have made this a much better picture if the concentration was more on the rehabilitation of the super hero, what made him that way and what it would take to make him change.
Granted this is on of Will Smith's 4th of July blockbusters and the audience, and critics, expect a certain type of picture from him. He can make the more 'serious' pictures at other times of the year. There are the usual explosions and wrecks, some so phoney looking they are laughable though I don't think they were intended to be.
I enjoy Will Smith's persona, his acting and his easy way of connecting with the audience. He delivers what the audience expects and wants, especially over the Juky 4th weekend and Hancock is just that, nothing more, nothing less. I'm waiting for his 'off-season' movie(s)!
