Here’s a slap in the face to conservative anti-gay groups: Esquire magazine recently named a gay couple among the best 10 dads of 2012.
The gay couple, Steven and Roger Ham, are raising 12 children—ages ranging from 3 to 17 years old—adopted from foster care.
According to the Arizona Republic,
Roger and Steven have been together for almost 19 years. Because
Arizona does not allow gay couples to marry or adopt, 10 of the adopted
children are legally bound only to Steven. The two other children,
Isabel, 14, and Logan, 8, had been adopted in Washington, which allows
gay couples to adopt, so both dads' names appear on their birth
certificates.
Until laws are changed, children in gay
households are not entitled to health and Social Security benefits,
inheritance rights or child support from the other parent because they
only have one legal guardian. If a gay couple splits up, only the legal
parent has custody rights.
Roger works as a school-bus driver
and Steven went back to working full time after spending six years at
home taking care of the growing family.
