Gay Republicans out at CPAC

, 365gay.com

There’s a new crew in the same-sex marriage fight, and they’re coming from the right.
GOProud
– a name that combines their conservative ideals with gay pride – was
founded by former members of the Log Cabin Republicans. The group is a
sponsor of the Conservative Political Action Conference.

In
an ironic coincidence, the GOProud booth was two spots away from the
National Organization for Marriage booth, which wants marriage to be
defined as between one man and one woman.

“It’s the ultimate
Washington power grab to say let’s have a federal constitutional
amendment that will federalize the question of marriage,” GOProud
chairman Christopher Barron told CNN.

GOProud’s sponsorship of
CPAC was not taken well by at least one group – the late Rev. Jerry
Falwell’s Liberty University Law School boycotted the event.

But
younger activists seem more open to marriage equality. And young people
are not in short supply at CPAC – of the 10,000 expected to attend, a
conference spokesman told CNN at least 60 percent of the attendees are
expected to be younger than 30.

Catholic Charities ends foster care, adoption program

, 365gay.com

Catholic
Charities, the philanthropic arm of the Catholic Archdiocese of
Washington, announced it ended a contract with the capital city to
offer foster care and adoption services to D.C. residents. The
organization said it cannot comply with rules that force it to place
children with gay and lesbian couples.

“Although
Catholic Charities has an 80-year legacy of high quality service to the
vulnerable in our nation’s capital, the D.C. government informed
Catholic Charities that the agency would be ineligible to serve as a
foster care provider due to the impending D.C. same-sex marriage law,”
the group said in a statement on its Web site.

“Foster
care has been an important ministry for us for many decades. We worked
very hard to be able to continue to provide these services in the
District. We regret that our efforts to avoid this outcome were not
successful.” said Ed Orzechowski, president and CEO of Catholic
Charities in the statement.

Last year, officials with the
organization said they might have to withdraw as many as 20 city
contracts as a result of the same-sex marriage law.

Olympic commentators make homophobic remarks

, editor in chief, 365gay.com

An
Australian TV channel has received more than a dozen complaints after
two commentators made homophobic remarks about men’s figure skating

Says Pink News:

Mick Molloy said: “They don’t leave anything in the locker room these blokes do they?”
Eddie McGuire interrupted: “They don’t leave anything in the closet either do they?”
Molloy
then joked that McGuire could get into trouble for the comment but then
said described another skater’s costume as something even singer Prince
would not wear.

Another competitor’s costume was described by
McGuire as “a bit of a broke back” – a reference to the gay cowboy film
Brokeback Mountain.

“A bit of Brokeback Mountain exercises – you can’t wear that,” Molloy responded.
Molloy also made a quip while attempting to apologise for a contentious remark.
He
said: “I suggested that there was a disaster happening at the ice
skating rink because organizers had found out one of the male ice
dancers wasn’t gay.

“And I apologise for that really sincerely.”
But
when a skater came into shot wearing a black and pink outfit with a
heart-shaped cushion, he said: “But it definitely wasn’t this guy.”

Australian
gay and lesbian groups are outraged; Nearly 2500 members have joined
the Facebook group ”Eddie Mcguire is ruining the 2010 Winter Olympics
coverage
