Fool's Gold--a Movie Review

Fool's Gold is suppose to be a romantic comedy. There certainly isn't very much comedy and there is almost zero chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. It seems to be trying to be another Romancing The Stone but certainly isn't.

It has a few things going for it and a lot that doesn't. The underwater scenes are terrific as some of the landscape scenes are. Supposedly taking place in Key West and the Caribbean it obviously has been filmed somewhere else and as it turns out during the credits there is a thank you to Australia, most likely in and around the Great Barrier Reef.

Matthew is a sight unto himself--all hard muscle, not ab ounce of body fat in sight, all solid pecs, abs and arms that look like solid rock. Unfortunately the unshaven face is distracting. There were a lot of sighs of disappointment from both the females and males in the audience when he is supposedly nude nothing more is shown than in the rest of the picture.

Kate Hudson has some of the looks of her mother Goldie Hawn but none of the comedic skills or perkiness of her. It seems she hit her peak in one of her first movies Almost Famous.

Donald Sutherland has one of the most atrocious accents ever heard on a actor and Alexis Dziens has to be one of the thinnest actresses I have ever seen on screen while Malcom-Jamal Warner (he played Bill Cosby's son on TV) is getting huge and almost unrecognizable. There is a gay couple, the cooks on Sutherland's yacht, who have some clever and somewhat bitchy lines but come across as a more pleasant couple than the stars.

Unfortunately all this talk about how the actors look is that it distracts you from the insipid plot. And if you are a boat lover, like Allen is, Sutherland's yacht will hold your interest as it shows all aspects, inside and outside, of the boat Allen will buy when I win the Lottery!!!
