As
soon as I heard about the fires in Australia I e-mailed Peter and
asked him if they were threatening his area--he e-mailed me the
following today
No, we are over a thousand miles north of the fires, the worst fires in the
history of Australia -- over 150 dead and many hundreds of homes and
hundreds of thousands of acres of forest gone... and we are a thousand miles
south of the floods -- the worst floods in memory, 16 metres above normal
level, towns folk entering their second week unable to leave their houses,
salt water crocodiles swimming along the streets, supermarkets empty, towns
running out of food. Here it is perfect... warm and clear. Wouldn't mind a
little rain in the next week -- and it looks as if we might get it. 2/3 of
Queensland, our state, -- an area roughly the size of Western Europe, is now
under water.
We were clearly and explicitly warned that this would be the result of
climate change, but no one wanted to listen. Now there is beating of breasts
and wailing and gnashing of teeth. Unemployment is up, the economy is shot
to pieces, China isn't buying our raw materials...
We have been warned about such conspicuous consumption and the mad rate of
borrowing too, but no one wanted to listen and now there's gnashing of teeth
etc....... there isn't very much to admire in humans, in my opinion.
Thanks for asking. Hope you are warming up. Colder winters were also
predicted with alarming accuracy -- the U.K. is still under snow.
