The Duchess--a Movie Review

I really don't know where I stand
with this movie. Though The Duchess
held my interest it seemed to run a lot longer, a lot longer, than it's 1 hour
and 45 minutes. I think Ralph Fiennes is one of our better actors and I enjoy watching him and he is excellent in this
film, but I do not understand the appeal of Keira Knightly who reminds me of a second
rate looking Brooke Shields and who isn't any good as an
actress.

Based on a true story of the life of
Georgiana Spencer who lived in the 18th century the movie tries to sell the idea
that Princess Diana (part of the Spencer family tree) and Georgiana had many
similarities in their life. Yes, they both were married, miserably, to older men,
both had to put up with his mistress and both were charismatic but the times were
different, they had different choices available to them and they both took different turns with their life in their
decisions.

The supporting roles are handled efficiently with Charlotte
Rampling a stand out and equal to Ralph Fiennes in the acting
department.

The story and the lives of the
characters hold your interest just as the photography, scenery and certainly the
costumes please the viewer's eyes. The music is good in the sense that it is
unnoticeable and doesn't interfere with the dialogue.

Would I recommend it? I'd say yes to become more familiar with
the way life was led in the 18th century, to enjoy the costumes and the scenery,
to watch Ralph Fiennes, but as a complete movie I wouldn't.
