I went to the dermatologist on Monday for various
skin problems. He prescribed 3 different ointments with one for the elbows and
knees, another for the feet and I wasn't sure what the third one was for. I had
the receptionist call the prescriptions in for me and I went to pick them up on
Wednesday.

The druggist told me that one of the medicines
wasn't covered by the drug plan in my HMO and that it would cost $44. I told him
that I couldn't afford it and I would get back to him.
When I got home I called the dermatologist's office and the receptionist
said the doctor would get back to me. He didn't call until the next day, well,
it wasn't him but one of his nurses. She said that the 3rd medicine wasn't a
necessity, basically a moisturizer!!!
Now why would a doctor prescribe a $44 tube of
moisturizer when I can go into the dollar store and get it for that dollar?? What magic
ingredient is in the prescribed medicine that wouldn't be, say, in a tube of Oil
Of Olay?
I really hate to think this way but could it be
that the doctor was/is getting a kickback from the drug company that is making
this ointment each time he prescribes it??? Am I getting that cynical the more
Ideal with doctors?
The bottom line is that I don't need the prescription, don't need to spend
the $44 and don't need another medicine.
