Disney Plus: Bambi, Newsies, Hamilton

I know I am the only one who subscribed to Disney Plus just to see "Hamilton" and then plan to cancel--right? WRONG!! In any case after watching "Hamilton" I saw 3-4 other movies I wanted to see so I may keep the subscription until the end of the month! (By the way it is $6.99 a month) :O)

1) "Bambi"--the animated movie--1 hour 10 minutes-- Has it really been 78 years since I have seen this movie? All I know it was great seeing friends like Thumper, Flower the skunk, the old owl and Faline! And did I really cry--at 84!--when Bambi's mother was shot? And did I really hold my breath the whole time father and son were running through the forest fire? I laughed when the baby duck's first time in water and I marveled at the first drop of rain fell on the leaf! It was a joy watching Bambi 'skate' on ice. I truly felt like a 6-year-old kid again. The only negative are the songs that really don't add anything to the film but they are mainly used as background sound. "Bambi" is still my all-time favorite Disney movie. Now I will have to see if "Dumbo" lives up to my memories!

2) "Newsies"--a Broadway musical, based on a movie, and a filmed performance--2 hours 14 minutes--I first saw the Broadway show in February 2015 and my review started with "At times it seems the ensemble dancers are defying gravity by flying through the air. The choreography by Christopher Gattelli is definitely the star of this show and the cast do him proud." I didn't remember breathing during any dance scene and I couldn't wait until the show moved up to Fort Lauderdale so I can see it again but it never did! I saw it last night in all its glory with the dancing a standout, the songs lingering in your mind, the cast excellent and the book touching and funny at the same time. The exchange between Katherine and Jack always makes me smile! Katherine: "You're not really scared of my father, are you?" Jack: "No, but I am pretty scared of you!" Come on, how more romantic can you get? I will see this a few more times before July is over if for no other reason than to see the encore dance ending the film.

3) "Hamilton"--the filmed version of the original Broadway production with the original cast--2 hours 40 minutes--I am in a small minority in that I didn't rave about "Hamilton" when I saw it on stage in December 2018. I do like many of the songs and the cast are top rate. I admire the multi-talented Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film uses close-ups that make the movie more intimate than the stage performance. I do suggest that you become familiar with the score and words before you watch the show and use closed caption while watching it.

Comments:

I enjoy those old Disney animated movies so much because of the old style color themes and 'by hand' animation as opposed to computer graphics.
