Disney Newsies--a Touring Production

At
times is seems the ensemble dancers of “Disney Newsies” are defying
gravity by flying through the air. The choreography by Christopher
Gattelli is definitely the star of this show and the cast does him
proud.

Based
loosely on a true events it is the story of newspaper boys, mostly
orphans, who sold papers on the streets of New York who decide to go on
strike when publisher Joseph Pulitzer raises the distribution price of
the newspaper to the boys.

Jack,
who leads the strike, is played with charm by Dan DeLuca, who is
occasionally sabotaged by the sound system. Stephanie Styles, his love
interest, is a package of dancing, singing, acting and a way with a
funny line that gets every laugh.

Though
it isn’t fair to to point out an individual of the ensemble attention
has to be given to 9 year old Anthony Rosenthal, who alternates the role
with Vincent Crocilla, and Jacob Kemp as his older brother.

Among
the adults in the cast Kevin Carolan as Governor Theodore Roosevelt and
Steve Blanchard as Pulitzer, along with Angela Grovey as the owner of a
vaudeville house, though she too is hindered by the sound system in her
solo number, add to the show.

With
music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, a book by Harvey
Fierstein, direction by Jeff Calhoun along with aforementioned
choreographer Gattelli, the whole show comes together as only a Broadway
show can in numbers like “Seize The Day” and “King Of New York”. The
huge movable scaffolding set by Tobin Ost and the projections by Sven
Ortel and Daniel Brodie along with the lighting design by Jeff Croiter
along with that remarkable ensemble of dancers and singers makes “Disney
Newsies” one of the best shows of the 2014-2015 touring season.

Running time 2 hours and 25 minutes including a 20 minute intermission.
Coming next to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts are “Wicked” March 11-29 and “Sister Act” April 14-19.
