Definitely, Maybe--a Movie Review

Father,(Ryan Reynolds) tells his daughter, (Abigail Breslin) a bedtime story.

You often hear, "They don't make movies like they use to,"--Definitely, Maybe is a good example of the way they use to make movies. It is a romantic comedy with romance, comedy and a 'mystery'. No, not a mystery with cops and robbers and murder or violence. It is romantic with hinting at but not showing sex and with comedy that may not be out loud funny but will have you smiling along the way.

It is a fairy tale with a happy ending even though you know that the mother and father will divorce but it does end with a happily ever after not involving the parents.

A father tells his daughter about his romantic past but changes the names of the women involved so that neither the daughter or the audience knows who her mother will be. It takes place in the 90s with a governor from Arkansas running for president as the backdrop and what happens to disillusion the father but the emphasis of the film is on the father's romances with the 3 women.

I did guess who he winds up with from very early on (because I wanted her to be the one) but I wasn't sure who the mother would turn out to be. None of the women are perfect and neither is the man--all are human beings,

The ONLY negative is that running 111 minutes it runs about 3 minutes--yes, 3 minutes--too long dragging out the ending.

It takes place in NYC showing it off splendidly from Central Park to longing south on Park Avenue to Grand Central Station to city streets up and down Manhattan.

The acting across the board is fine with none letting the audience down. Ryan Reynolds is the father and reminds me of Paul Rudd. Isla Fisher is the slightly kookie gal with an understandable fetish for the book(s0 Jane Eyre while Elizabeth Banks is the college girlfriend and Rachel Weisz as the sort of Greenwich Village intellect. Kevin Kline has a supporting role as a sort of lecherous writer/professor and Derek Luke as a friend and business partner of the father while Abigal Breslin is as cute and adorable as she was in Little Miss Sunshine. Hopefully she won't go the way of Osmont, McKaulley and whatever has happened to Dakota Fanning??

I definitely, no maybe (sorry, I couldn't resist!) recommend this movie to see what people mean when they say, "They don't make movies like they use to."
