I am not a fan of cowboy or Sci-fi movies neither would I go out of my way to see a Harrison Ford movie plus when there are 5 writers (Roberto Orci, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman, Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus) a red flag goes up. Along with all this Steven
Spielberg is listed as an Executive Producer and his name has been all
over the place so much lately it is almost meaningless.
"Cowboy
& Aliens" has every Western cliche you can think of plus someone
representing actors from the 40s, 50s and 60s films such as Ana de laReguera playing the Katy Jurado role. Whereas Ford would have played the John Wayne role 40+ years ago, now Daniel Craig has the lead and is a much better and sexier looking man. Of course there is the beautiful woman in this case Olivia Wilde, a more slight Barbara Stanwyck or not quite as pretty or classy as Grace Kelley. There is the saloon keeper/doctor (Sam Rockwell), town preacher (Clancy Brown), the town drunk and ranch boss's son (Paul Dano, his father being Ford), the sheriff (Keith Carradine), his grandson (Noah Ringer) along with Comanches not to forget the loyal dog. Oh yes, plus those pesky aliens lassoing the citizens of Absolution and taking them away.
Instead of cowboys and ranchers against Indians here we have cowboys, Indians, a dog, a young boy, all the townspeople, a gang plus a magic bracelet fighting the aliens. There
are bits and pieces of many winning westerns plus a little Indiana
Jones and the special effects of "Aliens", "Transformers" just to name a
couple of sci-fi movies. It is almost as if each of the writers brought their own favorite movie bits to this one movie.
What makes this movie work and, surprisingly enjoyable, is that the director Jon Favreau, and all the actors, play it straight, making it seem as this was the first western ever made without sly looks, camp or winks at the audience and the humor, and there are a few laugh out loud moments, coming natural.
By
the way it doesn't hurt that Daniel Craig is the best looking, most
masculine, cowboy ever in movies and will start a run on chaps without
looking half as sexy as he does wearing them.
This is a good summer movie for everyone, even people who don't like Westerns or Sci-fi movies!
