I was 13 years old when I saw this for the first time starring Ezio
Pinza and Mary Martin--now 63 years later I am looking forward to seeing
the touring company in Fort Lauderdale as eagerly as I saw it then as
well as the movie and the TV version and other stage productions. I can
tell you right now my eyes will well up during "You've Got To Be
Carefully Taught" one of the most powerful songs about discrimination
one can hear and, sadly, as true today as it was then.
I will be there opening night and for the next 2 weeks will post some of the many brilliant songs from the show
The issue of racial prejudice is candidly explored throughout the musical, most pointedly in the song, "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught".

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

acting. The show was a critical and box office hit and has since enjoyed
