Yes they still make movies with a beginning, middle and an end with the latter making sense. They still make movies without a single curse
word, special effect or rutting bodies. Of course that James Ivory (of
Ivory and the late Merchant) directed The City of Your Final
Destination, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala wrote the screenplay and that the director of photography is Javier Aguirresarobe certainly helped and that they had a cast who knows how to speak, act
and interpret the author of the original novel sometimes just using the
right looks.
The premise of the story is that a graduate student, Omar, played by Omar Metwally,
wants to write a biography of an author who recently committed suicide
as his future depends on it but the family turns him down. His
domineering girlfriend, Deirdre, played by Alexandra Maria Lara, insists that he go down to Uruguay, to the elaborate estate the family lives on, to change their minds.
The primary family consists of the writer's widow, Caroline, played by Laura Linney who seems to have secrets including that her husband may have left a
manuscript behind. Living in the same house is her husband's mistress,
Arden, played by Charlotte Gainsbourgh,
and the child she had by him. Living on the estate, in a separate house
is the writer's brother, Adam, the first born, played by Anthony
Hopkins, who has a much younger lover, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, who he brought to the estate when the latter was 15 years old and they are now celebrating their 25th year as lovers.
The
story revolves around Omar trying to change Caroline's, Arden's and
Adam's mind so he can write the book but all 3 have their own agenda,
their own secrets and their own problems.
The performances are excellent as are all the production values with the story slowly told, leisurely resolved, holding the audience's
attention and telling what may be shocking things but not in a shocking
way. These are refined, privileged people looking for solutions to life, finding them but not always the ones they want.
Bottom line: if you are into good story telling, good old fashioned movie making including good acting this film is for you.
What a great review.Thank you as always a fine job there.
I am envious.
