'Brokeback Mountain' to premiere as opera in 2013

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York City Opera commissioned Charles Wuorinen to compose an opera based on ''Brokeback Mountain,'' the 1997 short story by Annie Proulx that became the basis for a 2005 movie that won three Academy Awards.

The opera is scheduled to premiere in spring 2013, City Opera said Sunday. It will be City Opera's second Wuorinen premiere, following ''Haroun and the Sea of Stories,'' which was based on a Salman Rushdie novel and opened in October 2004.

''Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so,'' Wuorinen said in a statement.

''Brokeback Mountain'' is a cowboy romance about two ranch-hand buddies who start a homosexual affair when they meet on the fictional mountain in 1963.

I think it's a bit too pre-mature to judge this. It doesn't sound like a good idea to me right now, I have to admit that, but stranger things have surprised me. Evita, although not considered an opera in the classical sense, was pretty darn close to being one (as is Phantom and a number of other "lighter" operas...well, opera-like musicals) and who would think that such a political story would translate well into that kind of production? Gilbert and Sullivan were laughed at for the "type" of operas they did (and for the subjects/stories they told in rather buffooning messages), but some of those operas are now considered classics...maybe in a different league or classification, but still classics. And, it could be a rock opera...no, in this case, a country music opera...it's possible and, although maybe not everyone's cup of tea, it's acceptable.

I know I liked this movie a lot more than you did, but somehow the idea of a Western opera just seems so wrong!!!
