A Car, Freedom, Mended Hearts and Me

I had the car all to myself today--didn't have to go where I didn't want to go--went at the pace I wanted to--stopped where I wanted--did what I wanted to --just like when I am with Allen but I was driving and it was a much older car-- still a Buick--a 1989 Buick--it's really a feeling of being independent having a car and the freedom to use it!!!

Went to my second Mended Hearts meeting--during the rap session hour I told them how I felt the month before--unwelcomed, not given any information about membership, fees, newsletters and certainly didn't feel they were supportive though they pushed the idea of being a 'supportive' group. They listened and responded in a positive way but I still don't think they operate as a support group.

I was surprised that for people who have been through a life threatening operation they practiced/showed very little 'hands on' in the sense of touching--not even shaking hands let alone an arm around a shoulder and, as one said, they are not a 'touchy/feely' group which I find very strange.

I did join though I don't know how often, or even if, I will be going back though I do plan to attend their December holiday luncheon which is free and I can bring whomever I want to.

And, last but not least:

You should expect more support there, specially in a group like that.

I am also sorry the support group is not offering much support. Maybe they just need to get to know you? although they should be welcoming you with open arms!

Hmmm...I always thought that support groups were in place to support people through a difficult time. The ideal of the support group is to encourage the person wanting help and support them through the many trials which they face. I went to a support group for women that had endured domestic violence and they also had a 'rap session.' But, during that time, others would listen and offer encouragement and support. Touch was okay, as long as the person was okay with it. Personally, I was all for it after having attended for about three months. That support group became something I looked forward to. Hope you are able to feel that support should you go back to another meeting.

I think it totally stinks that you are not getting the kind of support you feel you should from Mended Hearts. Support groups really should be so much more than what you are describing.
