I go to see a movie like
"The Bounty Hunter" for several reasons and in this case it was because
of Jennifer Aniston and it was a romantic comedy which, usually, means
something light and not taxing. Some people would go to see it because
of Gerard Butler but I have never really been impressed by him.
The Bounty Hunter is
neither romantic or a comedy. It seems as if Sarah Thorp, the writer,
and the director, Andy Tennant, were aiming to be one of the fast,
furious and funny classic romantic comedies of the Spencer
Tracy/Katherine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell/Cary Grant, Clark Gable/
Claudette Colbert, Myrna Loy/Dick Powell kind but they completely miss.
In the romantic comedies of yesteryear there wasn't a scene of a guy's
leg being broken with a golf club while the male lead had a certain
charm, could even have been a rascal but you rooted for him and he
didn't look dirty and offered no reason for him to be half of a couple.
Gerard Butler brought
nothing to the role and except for a body the man doesn't seem to offer
anything to the film or his co-star. They might have it in real life, I
don't know, but they certainly don't have it in reel life. There doesn't
seem to be any sexual tension between them which is always an important
element in a romantic comedy. Of course 'they' is Butler and Aniston. I
have been a fan of hers since the days of friends and every now and
then she has done a good job in a small, serious independent film but it
seems she is trying to be a Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Meg Ryan,
girl next door type and she doesn't quite have 'it' for that. I like
watching her, herv figure is great, she is starting to get 'character'
in her face and I think she has to start a new direction in her acting
career.
The only one who stands out
of the supporting cast is Christine Baranski and she is a little over
the top as Jennifer's mother, which by the way is a little wrong, in
years.
There is really no reason to see
this movie in a theatre or pay to rent it as a DVD and I don't even
think you should waste your time watching it on free TV.
