Watercooler: Spit and bigotry don’t make good talking points

- You’ve lost the argument when you spit on someone or yell the word
faggot. Most dues paying members of the Tea Party movement aren’t
raving bigots. However, the message of the group get lost when a few in their
tribe think political debate includes spitting on a congressman, yelling the
epithet faggot at Barney
Frank, or calling John Lewis a nigger. Smart conservatives quickly
backtracked from this type of behavior. Dumb ones, like Iowa Representative Steve
King, didn’t see why people were shocked. No big deal in his
“mind.”
- What do you think about the health care
reform? We all know all gay
provisions were stripped from the health care bill. And I’m
disappointed with its anti-abortion language. With those problems stated up
front, what do you think of what the House passed last night? Good? Bad? Indifferent? What do you hope it does? What
worries you about it?
- Dan Choi was wrong. Before you call me a self hating queen
who supports NOM,
hear me out. Civil disobedience is a honored tradition, but Choi should have left his uniform at home when he chained himself to the White House
fence. Lieutenant Choi, a West Point graduate, must know that making a political
point in your military uniform is a no-no under the Uniform Code of
Military Justice. We can’t on one hand ask to serve in the
institution, and then show an utter disregard for the traditions and rules of
that institution.
- Rapid City Police screw up, but say they followed the
rules. Last Friday Rapid City’s police chief Steve
Allender issued a report saying his officers did everything
perfectly when they outed Jene
Newsome to her superiors. He is soooooooo sorry about what happened
to the sergeant, but everything was done by the book. But don’t worry. Allender
wants to meet with the Rapid City gay and lesbian community so “through
discussion and cooperation we can enjoy a mutual goal of healing and
understanding.” Rapid City folks, if this meeting happens let us know.
- How is your bracket doing? Cornell, Northern Iowa,
and Saint Mary’s still in the big dance? Villanova gone? Kansas
too? The madness of March baby. This is a silly gloat, but please allow it: the
Tarheels have made it to the quarters of the NIT.
- Dear Virginia: Your AG is a bit of a nut. I understand if
you are a Republican, you might need to give the occasional nod to the tin foil
crowd (alas we do it too on the left); however, Virginia’s Attorney General Ken
Cuccinelli has shown he is a 24/7 resident of conservative crazy. There is his
letter to the state’s public schools, asking then to end any policies that
prohibit anti-gay
discrimination. He embraced birthers,
those “thinkers” who are convinced Barack Obama isn’t a citizen of the US. Now
he opines on how “homosexual
acts” downgrade society. What’s next? An attempt to re-litigate Brown v.
Board of Education?
- Are you ready for next year’s Black Party? This past
Saturday was the annual rite known as the Black Party. A few
years back, I worked at a weekly newspaper that covered the party up the wazoo.
We did a story the week before, the week of, and seven days after everyone had
gone home. According to the editor all of that verbiage was necessary because
the event was “transcendent.” Any sublime tales you want to share? The below
picture is of Diesel
Washington and Damien Crosse, thespians in the gay porn world.
Washington attended the event, but he’s not shared any stories….yet. You welcome
for the picture by the way.
