The Bank Job has a lot going for it (and in it) and delivers!!
There really isn't a good, morale person in the film except for one policeman but you will be rooting for the people robbing the bank!!
The heist itself really isn't that interesting but the characters draw you in. Though it is very loosely based on a true story the many story lines it is the good and bad guys (you decide which is which!!) that make it a good old fashioned film.
The movie moves fast and keeps you involved until the end where the multitude plots are all tied up but blink and you just might miss something important as it is a very intriguing jigsaw puzzle. There are many funny throw away lines and subplots that are lightly passed over such as one of the robbers having been in porn films for his major attribute though it is never in a 'dirty' way.
The gang is robbing the bank for the loot but the one behind it all is having it robbed for certain incriminating pictures. (There was a picture last year with Jodie Foster and Denzel Washington--don't remember the name!!!--where the reason for the bank robbery was the same--though completely different from this picture it might have been based on the same idea.)
The whole cast is effective but I was very taken by the two leads. Saffron Burrows plays the woman who gets the robbers to do the job and is also involved in the heist. She is a striking woman whose every move keeps your eyes on her no matter who else is on the screen when she is. A fascinating woman to watch and a good actress.
In his own way the same thing can be said about the male lead, Jason Statham who has the same eye appeal and knows what he is doing on screen. He fills the screen up physically and is, also, fascinating to watch. When both are on screen at the same time whether separately or together you are watching!!!
The only quibble I have--and if you know me you know I will mention this--are two very violent scenes that while brief I wasn't able to watch.
While there are many reasons to see this movie Jason and Saffron are definitely two of the major ones!!
An aside--I belong to the AMC movie watcher club so today I got a free admission PLUS a free popcorn and soda--first time since my new year's resolution of 2007 that I had either in a movie!!!
