Bailey's
Bistro is in a highly competitive restaurant area and unless the
owner(s?) get with it quickly it will sink. I don't want it to seem I am
picking on them as I want every restaurant to succeed so I hope they
will count to 10 when reading this and prove my rating wrong with future
diners.
We walked in about 2 PM and, assuming they had a busy
lunch and didn't have time, the place was far from set, literally. The
front table had too many silver and napkin settings while most of the
other tables weren't set up. There were some tables with tablecloths
and others bare.
The server has to be immediately trained in the basics of service and I leave it at that.
A
new restaurant shouldn't be out of any items at 2 PM no matter how busy
they are but flour? At least that is what I was told when I ordered the
Fried Pickles, an item I have never had and still haven't had.
We
did order the house's signature item of homemade spicy chips ($2.99)
which were good. Allen had the Beef Stroganoff ($10) and a bottle of
coke ($1.50) never saying anything about the former though, to me, it
did not look fresh or 'homemade'. I had the turkey sandwich ($7) and
coffee ($1.50) which, considering I had to wait while they brewed a
fresh pot and waited a long time, was very watery. Talk about 'waiting a
long time' that is exactly what we did waiting for the food. Hopefully
they do better during lunch. There was nothing exceptional about the
turkey sandwich that I could have gotten at a Subway but with better
bread.
For dessert we had 'homemade' cheesecake ($3.99) which tasted like a bland flan on a crust and chocolate mousse ($3.99) which was good.
Our check, plus tip, came to $43.97. I had a groupon so
the check was $4.21 and we gave the server $20 which gave him a $15.79
tip Okay, we felt sorry for him!
"A bistro, in its original
Parisian incarnation, is a small restaurant serving moderately priced
simple meals in a modest setting. Bistros are defined mostly by the
foods they serve. Home cooking with robust earthy dishes, and
slow-cooked foods like cassoulet are typical." To survive in Wilton
Manor Bailey's has to take this definition to heart and get cracking.
They have the moderate prices and a modest setting but they now have to
concentrate on service and home cooking.
