I knew going in that "2012" would be filled with special
effects, and that it was, with here and there a stab at personal
stories which really don't add (or take away) anything to the end of the world
scenario. Special effects are fine but it seems that is all that sells movies
these days and how many volcano eruptions, crumbling freeways, falling
skyscrapers, earthquakes, solar fires, meteors falling, planes going wild, huge
ships and planes being tossed around not to forget all kinds of tidal waves can
one movie have? Well, "2012" has them all, and more, not to forget John Cusack doing a Shelly Winters impersonation from "The Poseidon Adventure" only staying
under water a lot longer and having a kid along with him.
The problem with special
effects today are that they are all done withCGI equipment and the wonder of "How
did they do that?" no longer is thought by the movie audience. When thousands of
'people' are killed, or jump off roofs, we know they aren't stunt actors but
images made by machines. Yes they are great to look at and hold your interest
but you are never emotionally involved.
This is director's Roland Emmerich 3rd or 4th disaster movie and he seems to love destroying
everything and anything but mostly in the USA and the USA. From Los Angeles to Las Vegas and including Washington D.C.,
not to forget all of Yellowstone Park, he also takes rack and ruin to the
Vatican City and Rio de Janeiro heading on the way to China.
In a movie like this you just sit back forgetting
logic and not expecting to understand the theories and science thrown at you or
really equate the 6 arks built with the original ark or the two of everything in
both people, of all races, and animals brought on the arks. You don't think
twice about a high tech plane being flown by a guy who has had a few flying
lessons and the hero being one till the end.
John Cusack is the hero, Amanda Peet his ex-wife, Oliver Platt the chief of staff of Danny Glover,
the president, whose daughter, Thandie Newton, you just know will fall in love with Chiwetel Ejiofer, who knew the end was coming. Woody
Harrelson is the hippie who knows the
end is coming while Osric Chau and Chin Han are brothers and Zlato Buric is a Russian billionaire who supplies
the one real intentional laugh in the film while Liam James and Morgan Lily are
the children of Peet and Cusack, not to forget Tom McCarthy, the
stepfather, along with George Segal as the old timer, all competent actors
earning their salaries.
"2012" is a film for those who love special effect
disaster movies and won't bore those who don't though it is rather long at over
2 and a half hours.
