I Don't Have a $100 to My Name!

I didn't go to the movies today--long story short--I had to go for an
evaluation for a transportation service--and because my interview was first I
had to wait around until the others were finished before we were all driven
home.

I had about an hour or two and my mind started to drift off. The title of
this post is true--maybe, just maybe, IF I had an emergency the only thing I have of value is the
diamond ring that Joe and Alybin gave
me many years ago. Aside from that I don't think all my furniture and household goods would
get me more than a couple of hundred of dollars if I was lucky. My birds?? Don't
know what I would get for them but even though I think my recent eye allergy is
due to their down feathers I wouldn't give them away.

Now for the record I am not complaining. Sure I
would like to do some things for the holidays, buy some special people gifts,
and I could use a few things, things I want not that I need. Though my only
income is my social security check I manage month after month to pay my rent, phone bill, fill my
stomach, go out to the movies once a week, sometime twice, eat lunch out with Allen every Wednesday and, now and then,
eat out a little more.

I may end up broke by the 30th of the month but I still can buy lotto tickets
and make a few dollars now and then and I did win enough money to go and see "A
Chorus Line" in February. I might not have the money I want to really show
Alfredo and Michael the city I love so much but we will get around.

I don't have a car but if or when I need/want to go somewhere thanks to
Allen, Gino, John, Cookie and others I get there.

I don't know about you folks but I have what I need and friendships so
with or without the $100 to my name I am doing more than okay!

You are so right. Money can make life a little easier, but it definitely doesn't guarantee happiness.

Needs and wants - two different things Martin. The wants will always be there and we can indulge them now and then, but the needs are like the air and water of our lives - without them, life expectancy is somewhere between zero and none.

This time of year always makes me focus on "what I don't need" versus "what I do need" and I do what I call "feed the need" - I don't have any money, so my gifts are literally made with love - this year it is homemade biscotti (chocolate pecan) and bread and shortbread and brownies for my friends (and home made dog biscuits for their four legged kids!).

I have never seen "I had a lot of money and houses and stuff" inscribed on a headstone, because in the end, it really doesn't matter does it?

It sounds to me like you have a perfectly balanced and lovely life regardless of income. Best of the holidays to you and yours....

me too Martin! once again this year Santa will only be bringing presents to Kota. we told him last year that we told Santa me and his dad didn't need anything and to just bring kota stuff. we will buy ourselves something after Christmas. and you are right, we have friends and happiness!
