Is it a Job or My New Career?

I
have never been one to want a career. Even when I was single and
working, it was always just a job to me. My supervisors would get mad
at me for not having any ambition to move up the corporate ladder.
After I had Kota, my husband and I decided it would be better to make
financial sacrifices so that I could be a stay at home mom. I am kind
of old fashioned that way. When we were hit by severe financial
problems last year I decided it was time to go back to work and help my
family. Something part time so I could work around Kota's school
schedule. Wal-Mart seemed an ideal option, close to home, part time
work, no stress being a cashier. Not like when I worked in accounting!
Surprisingly I really liked my job. The interaction with customers,
gaining new friendships, all pluses in my book. So lately I have two
department managers fighting over me, trying to convince me to come
work forthem. The first was the shoe dept. This idea did not appeal to
me at all, seemed very boring. Plus the work schedule would have been
crazy. One day last week I was at my register, it was a slow morning.
The mom of kota's babysitter, Dot, works in jewelry. She is the dept.
manager. She asked me how many hours I get. I told her I am only part
time so I get anywhere from 25 to 30 hours a week. She asked if I would
like to be full time, start getting vacation days, etc. She wants me to
work in jewelry. Now this idea appealed to me! The hours would be nights
and weekends but jewelry closes up around 10 at night. No more midnight
shifts! Plus working with Dot would be great. That family has really
adopted us as part of theirs. Unfortunately there is a freeze on
hiring, even moving between departments, until after inventory is over.
But it sounds like a done deal, I will be moving to jewelry. There will
also be a pay increase, and getting 40 hours a week will be very
beneficial! I do lovebeing a cashier but it has it headaches as well.
Take yesterday for instance. I am not sure what happened but by luch
time our store looked like the last weekend before Christmas! It was
jam packed with people, long lines at the register. It was seriously
crazy. And people were just buying normal things they usually buy. So
it would be nice to get away from the madness of that, having people
stare at me from the end of a long line. lol And have I mentioned how
much I love jewelry! Most women go crazy for shoes, not me, it's
jewelry. I don't have alot of it, due to lack of funds. But I am slowly
stocking up on my stone of choice, sapphires! There might be some
tension at first working in jewelry. As Dot had chosen me to move to
jewelry and the other girls seem a little resentful about it. I had one
ask me yesterday if I was the Mary who was coming to jewelry. And she
had a weird look on her face. Why do people have to be like that anyway?

Kota
has a new best friend. One of the kids over at his babysitters. His
name is Christian and he is 13 I think. But they are best buddies. I
told Christian on Spring Break, one of my days off, I would have him
come over our house for the day. I talked to his mom yesterday, she
also works at walmart (lol). She told me Christian is a little mentally
challenged and has problems making friends. She is so thankful for Kota
being over there and befriending her son. Christian told his mom that
Kota is the only friend who understands him. He is really a sweet kid
and a big talker as well! The family had Kota stay late on Thursday for
a birthday dinner for one of the kids. I think they think of kota as
just another one of their kids. Which is great in my book! Plus I have
a whole family of friends now. As soon as I walk in the door they all
start talking at once to me. It's really quite funny. Ofcourse I have
to pick on my buddy John while I am there. He was my first friend of
this family.

So
my life is going quite well. I am happy, my job is going great and I
have an extended family now. Oh one more thing! Since I am not doing
tae kwon do anymore I have started walking on days I am off. I walk
with my stepson's fiance. I think we do about 2 miles right now. I
won't be sure till I get my pedometer today. I can remember when I
could hardly walk a half mile! And now I feel like I could go further
but I don't want to wear out my walking partner.

So if you asked me how I was feeling I would have to say happy and full of life!
