Sad News

A shady tree filled campus and lovely gardens are not enough when economic troubles caused Saint Gregory University to close it's doors forever.

Yesterday, I went with friends to preview some of the books, art and furniture to be auctioned off. We were dismayed to find that the books are going in lots of 30,000 which limits the sale to libraries.
I was very interested in the art but it is being combined with entire suites of office furniture. They had at least l00 nice stacking chairs and my friends and I discussed dividing them but there were not enough of us to make it practical.

It was an interesting day and a picturesque one. Monks in robes transported us on golf carts from building to building. It was so hot and we were grateful for the rides.

I have a special interest in this University because one of my former students is a monk there. I could never have predicted that he would long for the solace and peace of an abbey. Life is full of surprises.

They have a wonderful museum on the grounds but fortunately it is independently funded so it will remain open.

We had a late lunch at Hamburger King which is one of Shawnee's
famous restaurant. It was delicious as always and a threat to
cholesterol levels. I had a bacon cheesburger, potato wedges and a coke and split home made coconut pie with a friend. I felt guilty but it was worth it.

Greetings, Jeri, Teal and Laura! After having to give up on mybloggers in 2014 because I could not log on or get to my blog, and I couldn't find a mybloggers customer service contact to help me fix what was amiss, imagine my surprise when out of the blue, I started once again receiving enotices of blog posts this week. So nice to rejoin you all!

This sad ending of St. Gregory University, the only Catholic liberal arts university in Oklahoma, touched my heart and made me dig a bit into its long history since its founding as a high school in the 1870s. As a journalist, I seemed to cover numerous sad events like this in the 1990s in Northwest Ohio.

I found an article that summarizes many of the particular problems St Gregory had to deal with. This school's story is not unique. It applies to many founding orders of men and women religious facing rapidly dwindling numbers of members, plus underfunding or financial stresses, and having to make very hard decisions. Perhaps you will find it interesting.

So nice to hear from you. I'm sure you've heard that old saw about true friendships - we can lose touch and then take up again right where we left off.

Thank you dear for the information. It is a lovely place and I hate to see it go. I am so glad you are with us again. We try to soldier on even though facebook has taken so many of our people.

It is tragic when a valuable part of the past closes for lack of funds. Could they not get enough students? I wonder if the buildings will be repurposed, or torn down by a developer.

I hope the buildings will be repurposed because they are beautiful, inside and out with a distinctive style. I hope they are not torn down, it would be a tragic waste. There tuition was higher than in our state universities and they had less to offer. Donations were down too.

What are the monks going to do now?

I suppose the monks will have more time for reflection and prayer now. The abbey will remain open. I am wondering if they will not be care takers for the grounds and the buildings for awhile.
