Teacher Has Class Vote Disabled Kid Out ...

WTF?!? Here is an excerpt, you can read the whole thing here....

Wendy Portillo, a teacher in Port St. Lucie, FL,
decided to let her kindergarten class "vote out" a fellow student.
Alex, age 5, is in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger's
Syndrome. Alex was forced to stand in front of his class while each
classmate said what they disliked about him (including "disgusting" and
"annoying"). He lost by a vote of 14 to 2 and left the classroom.

The state attorney's office has concluded the matter did not meet
the criteria for emotional child abuse, so no charges will be filed.
The matter is now in the hands of the Port St. Lucie school district
and the Florida Department of Children and Families....

Anyone else think this "teacher" should never work with children again?

That's ridiculous! What that teacher allowed to happen in her classroom, with her approval, is certainly emotional abuse! I would hate to see what they do classify as emotional abuse. That poor child stood in front of his entire class while they said something negative about him. How very sad for that child! This infuriates me! I would hope that they would not allow that teacher to work with children again.

I saw the Mom and her son on the news this evening. The Mom spoke out against this. Good for her!! The news said that the Palm Beach ,Florida school district has removed this teacher from any children while they are investigating. I hope they don't let her come back.

If this is not emotional abuse, then it cannot be defined! Somebody kick that teacher in the butt!

It's so wrong that a student be kicked out of school just for having a disability. Is Aspersgers similar to autism? I'd be surprised that the school didn't have an Aide or someone in the classroom to give the child extra help.

My grandson is autistic and I really bleed when I hear this kind of story.I can't imagine a teacher being this unfeeling.

I can see she cares about children.....grrrrr What about a vote to kick her out! Calling yourself a teacher... How is that possible! Here we should say: not competent for her profession and get rid of her!!

I actually have a student with Asperger's syndrome and guess what? All you have to do is make them feel like they are welcome and wanted and they respond quite will. I have a student and I have such patience with her. She's very annoying at times, but just being patient and being sweet with her and treating her as human makes her smile. She says I'm her favorite teacher and I know why. No one else wants her but me. She's really creative and very smart and I love the fact that she's so eager to learn.

This is the first time I've visited you here on MyBloggers...glad I stopped by. I'm sure I don't have to tell you why this struck a particular cord in me. Thanks for sharing it and raising awareness. I'm only a bit confused as to why it didn't meet the criteria for emotional abuse.Perhaps for that to be the case, it would had to have been done repeatedly? And who has the unfortunate job of determining how much is too much emotional abuse...from a trusted teacher, at that.

That's awful..... I hope they bump her to the curb!!! and let it be a lesson to all. Don't they have inservices anymore for teacher, with specific topics such as this? Geezzz Louise!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Florida--and you think Kentucky is bad?!?!?!
comment by greatmartin on May 26, 2008 9:25 AM ()
What is just as bad as the teachers behavior is the state attorneys office concluding it did not meet criteria for emotional abuse. What a bunch of f*****g dumbasses! I hope the parents sue that school board and the state attorneys office. DISGRACEFUL!

WTF? Who in the hell hired this idiot???? I see lawsuit in great big letters flashing over his woman's head. She doesn't need to be working anywhere near kids.

Personnally, I think that the parents of this child, ought to be put in the classrom, with the 'teacher' and the keys of the said classroom, then any person/s working in the school should be given the day off, in order for the parents not, to be disturbed - and then belt the daylights, out of him/her. That's my, opinion, anyway.
