Swept Away by My Duties

I have been in overdrive trying to get out the next issue of the "Breeze". It amazes me that civilian magazines require a full time staff of dozens to accomplish what me and four other volunteers do within a matter of weeks- three times a year. (Makes me think of Fredo's article about medical epenses!)

As editor I choose the articles and edit all of the photographs and do all of the design and layout. While I do edit some of the text, one other person does most of the text editing and the final copy is proofed by at least three other people. Most civilians would find it dry or boring- it is a news magazine/ professional journal that targets a specific audience. Because I spend so much time on it I have been unable to keep up with the posts here.

While flying to/from Pennsylvania I did have time to read two books. The one was "A Gift of the Emperor", a story about one of the almost 200,000 women from Korea and other Asian nations captured as sex slaves by the Japanese during WWII. While this character met a kinder fate than most, it was still a very sad and sometimes horrifying tale. Korea erected a monument in honor of these unfortunate women.

The book end with the formation of a North and South Korea and how/ why that occurred.

After this I watched a movie. One of my favorite genres is foreign films. This was a French movie titled "Indochine" and followed the lives of a family just before Indochina threw off the yolks of the French Empire and the creation of North and South Vietnam. Despite the horrors of the (later) Viet Nam War that helped South Vietnam retain independence from North Vietnam, many US soldiers returning home said that it was the most beautiful country they had ever seen. The landscape is both exotic and sumptuous. I was enthralled! No wonder I heard that comment so many times.

This post is long enough and I will post again soon as I have some recent news and thoughts to share.
