Obama wants to close the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay. The prison's name has become synonymous with human rights abuses and imprisonment without trial, values we cherish as Americans. Problem is, many of the detainees cannot be sent home or they will be tortured or killed by their countrymen, and the USA doesn't want them either. It's another conundrum. We can't close the prison camp if there is no place to send the detainees. It is important to our relations with the EU to close the prison, yet they don't want these prisoners either. Can't blame them. We created this problem, so the solution is our responsibility too.
Obama has not yet said if anyone who stands accused of torturing these prisoners will be prosecuted. I lean towards not doing so, but some of these guys were not just following orders. They are sickos with no respect for human life and dignity who actually enjoyed eliciting screams of terror and inflicting pain. Wonder if Bush will pardon all of them as his final act before leaving office?
That leads me to the issue of Presidential pardons. I wonder how long Bush's list is and who will be on it? Will he include a few people from his own administration? I hope his own name heads the list.
