Sitting & Thinking, or Just Thinking

"Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits."

Satchel Paige (1906-1982)

"Sometimes I take some time out for me, sometimes I just take some time out."

Donnamg

Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige was an American baseball player whose pitching in several different Negro Leagues and in Major League Baseball made him a legend in his lifetime. "Satchel", who had come from a troubled past, found a new life when someone believed in him enough to give him a chance. His career in baseball was a rough and bumpy one, yet he rose to become one of the sport's most talented players. In spite of his many controversial habits and displays of unprofessional behavior, baseball professionals and fans alike respected and admired the man that loved what he did, had an outstanding baseball career, helped advance racial acceptance, and rightfully earned his place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. "Satchel" went on to secure some truly great baseball memories, write books, make public appearances, and to enlighten and/or amuse us with his notable quotes.

Donnamg has never played baseball, nor can it be said that she has had any lifetime career. Donna's past includes some rough and troubling times, but she found a reason and a means to change to a happier and more meaningful life because there were people who believed in her and gave her a chance. Although her professional and personal career has had bumps along the way and can still be rough at times, she has risen to regard life and living as gifts to be received and appreciated, given and shared, and experienced and absorbed on each and every day. In spite of Donna's sometimes controversial habits and questionable displays of behavior, she is blessed with people who accept her as she is and call her a friend. She may never achieve anything that comes close to legendary fame, but Donna's only desire is to do the best she can, be the best person she can be, and to make a positive difference in the lives of those who know her.

Both "Satchel" Paige and Donnamg emphasize the importance of "taking a breather" from time to time. Life/living is a full-time job, regardless of what a person does with it, how a person lives it, and all that is going on in it. Re-charging oneself will help maintain the levels of energy we all need. However, sometimes it's good, a great idea, to simply take a rest.

I grew up a Cleveland Indians fan. As a boy I watched Satchel in many ball games. I got his "X" autograph on a program but lost it. I have fond memories of those days when he played on the teams that had Bob Feller, Lou Boureau, Mike Garcia, Ken Keltner and other stars. Larry Doby was a teammate, the first black player in the American League. I named my gray cat "Satchel" after him.
