The R I Repertory Theater

The above photo shows the present members of Trinity Repertory Company, more commonly known as Trinity Rep. Trinity Rep is proud to have the last permanent resident company in the country.

Trinity Repertory Company of Providence, Rhode Island, was founded in 1963 and has been considered one of the most respected regional theaters in the country. Trinity Rep is the largest arts organization in the state and it has a history of presenting issues and concerns that address the community, offering numerous initiatives that promote access to and education of theatrical art, and entertaining audiences with a highly varied repertoire. This Tony award-winning troupe presents a balance of world premiere, contemporary, and classic works.

Amazingly, Trinity Rep has produced over 57 world premieres, including the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel’s, The Long Christmas Ride Home, under the direction of artistic director, Oskar Eustis, best known for first bringing Tony Kushner’s Angels in America to stage. The Company has also presented stirring contemporary dramas, such as Cider House Rules, and popular classics, such as it's successful annual staging of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. It also presents it's free annual outdoor program, the Trinity Summer Shakespeare Project. On top of all that, Trinity Rep has trained hundreds of new actors and directors and helped to launch the careers of many successful individuals. One such individual was a young lady from Texas who had tried acting, but had decided against it and decided to pursue an education to become a child psychologist instead. JoBethWilliams did get her B.A. at Brown University in Providence, but the acting bug hit her again, so she studied and worked with Trinity Rep for two-and-a-half years before setting out on an acting career of her own.

Local, national, and international recognition has come to Trinity Rep consistently. In 1968, it was the first American theater company to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. The company received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater Company in 1981, produced four television productions for PBS, and has toured to India and Syria. Arts education at all levels is central to the Trinity Rep mission. Started in 1977 as the Trinity Rep Conservatory and continuing today as the Brown/Trinity Rep MFA program, the graduate level training program has guided a new generation of actors and directors with training in the environment of a professional producing theater. And, through Project Discovery, Trinity Rep's pioneering educational outreach program launched in 1966, the theater introduces over 10,000 students a year to live theater through daytime performances of Trinity Rep productions. The Young Actors Studio allows thousands ofstudents across the region to participate in after-school enrichment activities at the theater as well as in outreach programs at local community centers. More in-depth arts education is offered through post-show discussions with the actors, in-school visits, and backstage workshops. In ongoing community outreach, Trinity Rep cultivates new audiences throughout southeastern New England with open captioning and Pay-What-You-Can performances along with a variety of rush and targeted discounts for every production.

Trinity Rep had it's humble beginnings in Providence's Trinity United Methodist Church, but has called the Lederer Theater (formerly known as the Majestic Theater) in downtown Providence since 1973. Thanks to Citizen's Bank's June of 2000 gift of a former branch building, Trinity Rep built the Citizens Bank Theater inside what is now known as the Pell Chafee Performance Center, which is home to the Brown/Trinity MFA program and Trinity's grade 4-12 educational activities. Trinity Repertory Company has grown to become the true linchpin of Providence's arts and entertainment district. It employs over 100 artistic and administrative staff, and generates more than $12 million in economic activity each year. The theater enjoys support from the region's leading corporations as well as the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, The Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities, and the City of Providence.
